It has been said that the moment a child is born, a mother is also born. A woman may exist for many years, but she only becomes a mother once she gives birth to her child. And indeed, I'm sure a lot of new moms would love to tell their babies: "Oh come on, we're both new here!"
Being a new parent can be very overwhelming, to say the least. There is always one more new thing to learn, one more lullaby to hum, one more tantrum to hush, one more poop to scoop, one more hour of snooze to lose, and inevitably, one more "I told you so" from your own mother. But what you get in exchange is the privilege of experiencing what could be the greatest love you'll ever know.
It's easy to get distracted by the many needs of the newest member of your family. This is not as easy as getting a new kitchen appliance. Babies don't come with a manual, unfortunately. Even so, motherhood will not be the exciting journey that it is without the challenges along the way. To get at least one hurdle out of the way, here's a little 101 about taking care of baby hair.
Caring for baby hair is often overlooked. Admit it--you don't really think much about putting baby hair accessories on your child's three strands of hair. While your baby may have very little hair, it's very sensitive and must be cared for properly.
Be gentle. As infants generally have very little hair, there is no need to wash it everyday. Do it on an as-needed basis or every few days. Be very careful not to go obsessive-compulsive on your child. Applying pressure to the soft spot on your baby's head will endanger her.
Bye bye tears. A lot of babies and small children hate to have their hair washed. One reason could be that their shampoo has stung their eyes before and they are afraid that it might happen again. One solution is to make sure you buy a shampoo that is especially formulated for babies, made with mild ingredients that won't sting.
Hush little baby. When shampooing your baby's hair, gently recline her while holding her in the bath. But brace yourself because when in this position, babies experience a reflex and get frightened. Just make sure you hold your baby securely and put her at ease by speaking in a comforting tone.
So the baby hair is clean, but the mother's job does not end there. Of course, you have to style it! Especially if it's a baby daughter we're talking about, a mother can never be passionate enough to make her child look her best (and maybe show her off in the neighborhood afterwards).
But your baby's barely-there hairstyle isn't doing her any favors, as all she keeps getting are praises of how adorable HE is and how HE takes after HIS father. Sacrilege! Even when she is decked out in pink, some people can be so darn clueless. A neon sign saying "SHE'S A GIRL!" might be out of your budget. A cheaper solution: baby hair accessories.
Here clippy, clippy. Aside from the usual baby items, a lot of boutiques now offer hair accessories specifically designed for babies' wispy, delicate hair. Look for brands whose accessories stay in place even with just a few strands of hair. We have another lovely review and this time it's from MomViews.net. It's a site that is dedicated to smart parenting and smart shopping and features news and reviews on the latest items in the market for your family, including some really neat baby gear and baby items.
This was actually written months ago, but I just had to share it with you! The review goes:
"My daughter may be decked out in all pink and yet she still gets referred to as a boy. "Oh, HE'S so cute" and I of course cannot help but to correct it. "No, she's a girl" followed by " yeah, I know it's so hard to tell when they are infants" just to lessen the embarrassment they may feel. I met Annie Salyer from No Slippy Hair Clippy a few years ago out in LA. She was super sweet and really made a lasting impression on me. Her brand seemed really creative and I always heard others raving about her products. Well, that was pre my little cutie patootie, and now I have a whole new appreciation for Annie's creations!
Aubrey's hair is super fine, much like mine. She is not lacking for hair, just enough to hold in any kind of hair accessory. Of course I dress her pretty darn girly, but that still doesn't stop those random strangers from asking what "his" name is? What does a mom have to do??
So, No Slippy Hair Clippy to the rescue! Seriously, she has not gone a day since without her Clippy! We have had them for less than a week, and I have had no less than three people ask where we got such cute hair accessories.

Angela Edgeworth, the co-founder of pediped footwear, recently sat down with Erin Clack of Footwear News to discuss her newly blooming company and why her shoes really are that amazing.
FN: Pediped turns five this year. Are you surprised by how quickly the company has grown? AE: Yes, but we were always working hard, so we didn’t have much time to enjoy it and sit back and pat ourselves on the back. [Considering the rapid growth], we quickly revised our plans and goals for the company, and since then, we have been on track — even in the downturn.
FN: What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced in growing the company? AE: With any growth company, finding and hiring the right people is always the biggest challenge. We have been fortunate over the past year to get some great people in sales, marketing and product development. We have gone from just Brian and me to more than 270 people in only a few years, so we are always seeking talented people with experience who can make our company better.
FN: You didn’t have a footwear background when you started Pediped. How did you go about learning the craft of shoemaking? AE: We hired industry experts and weighed their opinions before we made major decisions, and we combined this with actual real-world testing. Our Originals line was continually modified for more than 18 months before the product was ever ready for market. We had parents providing constant feedback as we evolved the design we ultimately brought to market in 2004. Some of the most valuable advice came from doctors who had recently become parents.
FN: When it comes to baby shoe construction, what are some of the biggest “no-nos”? AE: I cringe when I see babies in rigid, hard-bottomed shoes — those shoes unnaturally mold their feet. We begin life with unformed bones in our feet and over time, they fuse into the 26 bones we have as adults. This process takes a long time, and shoes that are too rigid or too tight are effectively changing the shape of a child’s foot. This is true of shoes throughout childhood, not just during the baby years. Most experts agree this process of forming the foot bones does not end until you are 25, so children should never be in tight or restrictive shoes.
FN: Why do you use coated leather bottoms on the Originals shoes instead of the more typical rubber? AE: One big problem we see out there is the amount of rubber used on many first-walker shoes. While grip is great for adults — who push off with every step and have a standard-length stride that is developed over time — new walkers have not figured out their perfect stride length yet. First steps are tentative: Infants do not plant their foot and then push off. Instead, they slide as they take different length strides and learn just how far down the ground actually is. With rubber bottoms, the shoe grips when the sole first hits the ground, so the foot jams forward in the shoe and the child can trip. Our Originals shoes, which have leather bottoms, mimic most closely what it is like to walk barefoot.
These shoes are a must have for babies who have yet to take their first step and tots who are already bolting around the house like lightning. They are a wonderful blend of science and style and every little girl and boy should have a pair.
Oh, and don't forget the matching hair clips of course!
In just two weeks my little niece will turn the big -1- year old. I simply cannot believe how fast time has flown. I remember when she had just been born, she was infinitesimally small. I could fit 10 of her little hands in mine. She was fresh and snuggly and held all the promise that new life affords. And now one year later she is all the more beautiful! She is deserving of the most spectacular of birthday celebrations, alas I will not be in close enough proximity to help facilitate this. So, in honor of my precious little niece, I have written a list of 5 must haves for any one year old birthday bonanza:

Our hair clips, headbands and bows are no strangers to the hair of the some of the world's most notable celebrity babies. I want to take this opportunity to take a stroll through cutie-ville, as we pause a few moments to "oooooo" and "ahhhhh" over some undeniably pinchable cheeks... and clippies! (Well I suppose hair accessories can't really be classified as pinchable, but you know what I mean... adorable!!)
The beautiful and talented Samantha Harris, from Dancing with the Stars, just loves NSHC products. Her daughter Josselyn has been seen wearing our clips on at least three separate occasions.
